Part-time work

Hey everyone:
I have been scouring Craigslist for a part-time job while I'm in grad school, and so far, no dice. I want to work 10 to 20 hours a week and have skills in editing, writing, general office work, counseling, creative stuff ... I am looking for something that pays more than minimum wage. Doesn't have to be a "serious" job---just need to earn some $$.

Any leads or ideas?

Robber at Milano Restaurant

This is a shame. I eat there all the time. I always kinda felt safe there. I guess none of us are safe no matter where we are.

OAKLAND _ Four robbers invaded Milano Restaurant on Grand Avenue Sunday night, taking cash and valuables at gunpoint from a dozen patrons and employees.
Investigators said two of the four robbers had guns. There was no violence, but police said when one patron in his 50s stood up, one of the robbers walked over and put a pistol to his head, forced him to sit down and empty his pockets.

The robbers were last seen running east on nearby Elwood Street.

The takeover robbery at Milano, a popular Italian restaurant at 3424 Grand Ave., was the third takeover robbery in Oakland in as many weeks.

The Happy Garden Restaurant, 4112 MacArthur Blvd. was robbed Friday night at 9:35 p.m. Three men robbed a dozen customers there.

On March 31, Red Boy Pizza, 1500 Leimert Blvd, was robbed by two men.

Police said it's unknown if the same robbers were involved. Detailed descriptions of the robbers was not available.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $7,500 in reward money in each restaurant robbery. Anyone with information can call police at (510) 238-3326 or Crime Stoppers at (510) 238-6946.

Hi,
I've recently moved back to this neighborhood and remember there being regular Adams Point Community meetings and someone had a regular walk scheduled on Thursday evenings. Does anyone know if these two things are still happening? I'd appreciate any info you might have. Your neighbor,

Searching for off-street Parking in the Adams Point Area

Hi all,

I'm a newcomer to the area and will be moving this month to a complex near Montecito and Lee streets (near the Whole Foods). The problem is, the place I'm renting only has one parking spot for the owner, so I'm currently seeing if it's possible to rent another spot from any residents in the area who might not need their space.

I was also wondering if Whole Foods ever decided to let residents use their parking lot after hours, does anyone know about that?

If anyone has info on parking spaces, please do let me know, I greatly appreciate it!

Thank you!

Just found this while searching for some info on the proposed whole foods at the Cox Cadillac site/eyesore. Anyone know the status of that? It seems to have dropped off the city planning agenda. What does everyone think of having a whole foods there?

looking for reputable used Honda dealer

OK, is that a contradiction? I have never bought a car and am looking to buy a used Honda or maybe a Toyota. I thought going through a dealer would be safer than a private seller because I could get a warranty, but the reviews I found on line of Oakland Honda were all pretty bad. Does anyone have a recommendation for a reputable dealer somewhere in the Bay Area?

Thanks!!!

Before I left for vacation I got a letter in the mail from the city of Oakland asking for an increase in the LLAD tax. For me, it will go from $111 to $156.
$45.00 additional per year for homeowners to keep streetlinghts on, streets cleaned and parks maintained. Personally, I don't really see $45 a year helping the situation- parks are overgrown, parks staff keeps getting cut, street sweeping does not happen every other day on my block(though they do ticket every other day), and spraying medians with roundup in the name of maintenence is something I do not want any of my dollars going towards.
I haven't the time to do do full research- at least right now- any opinions and/or facts on this?
Subject: Final Bulky Waste Pick Up of 2005 & Hazardous Waste Disposal Drop Off This Weekend

The deadline for scheduling the final bulky waste pick up of the year is fast approaching. Oakland residents can call 613-8710 to schedule a pick up. The Oakland Hazardous Waste Facility will be accepting drop offs on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Details below.

All Oakland residents who have weekly garbage and recycling service in buildings of 4 units or less are entitled to one bulky waste pick up per year (each unit is required to have service, and one bulky waste pick up can be scheduled per unit).

The pick up is on the regular collection day, but appointments are going fast. Once they run out of appointments for this year, bulky waste service will count against next year's entitlement.

Renters in buildings of 5 or more units are not entitled to bulky waste pick up, but Oakland taxpayers subsidize bulky waste pick up to rental buildings through tax revenues used to fund Public Works, which picks up illegally dumped items on city property.

Waste management will not pick up hazardous waste, however the Oakland hazardous waste facility will be open this Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm for Alameda County residents, no appointment is necessary. Further information about hazardous waste and the drop off schedule for the next six months (in Oakland--there are two other facilities) is included below.

The BBC Litter Task Force

For further questions on hazardous waste, call (800) 606-6606 or visit
(back to top)
Fighting Silverfish
Stick to Glue
Use Elmer’s-type white glue or yellow carpenter’s glues for wood, china, paper and other porous materials. Use a glue stick or paste rather than rubber cement.
Vinyl Floors
Spice Up Your Home
Removing Onion Odors
Add a few drops of vinegar to soapy water to remove onion odors from utensils, chopping blocks, or hands. Rubbing hands with the cut end of a celery stalk will also remove odor.
Freshen Up Your Garbage Disposal
To clean garbage disposals, grind used lemons in the disposal or pour in baking soda.
Cat Smells?
Oil-based Paint / Spray Paint
Use latex water-based paints and apply with a brush or roller whenever possible.
Paint Stripper
Use a scraper, rasp or abrasive block, heat gun or sandpaper to remove paint without chemicals.
Use water or alkali-based paint strippers rather than solvent-based products.
Slug Trap — or "Beer Garden"
Cut several 1-inch square openings in the sides of a clean covered cottage cheese container or margarine tub. Sink the container into the soil so the openings are just above the soil surface.
Remove the lid and pour in 1/2-inch of beer, or whip up a yeast mixture:
2 tablespoons flour
1/2 teaspoon baker’s yeast
1 teaspoon sugar
2 cups warm water
Replace the lid.
Slugs will be attracted to the trap, fall in and drown. Empty the container every few days and refill.
Weed Killer
To control weeds, hand-pick them and then apply mulch
from wood chips or grass clippings. This mulch also acts as a natural fertilizer.
You can also pour boiling water on dandelions.
Repeat over several days.
Make Your Own Fertilizer
4 parts seedmeal or fishmeal
1 part agricultural lime or dolomite
1 part rock phosphate
or 1/2 part bonemeal
1/2 part kelpmeal
Measure ingredients and place in a large container.
Mix well. Use in garden or on lawn, as well as beneath seeds or as a side dressing for vegetables.
Aphid & Mite Control
Mix 1 tablespoon pure soap with 1 tablespoon vegetable oil in 1 gallon of water.
Spray on aphid- or mite-infested plant parts.
Store unused portion in labeled container.
Use pure soap only. Detergent can burn plants.
Attract "Nice Bugs"
Introduce friendly insects such as ladybugs (natural enemies of aphids), ground beetles and praying mantises, to rid your garden of uninvited pests. Check with a nursery for plants that attract these insects.
Black Spot & Powdery Mildew Spray
Mix 3 tablespoons baking soda with 2 teaspoons insecticidal soap or ultra-fine horticultural oil in 1 gallon of water. Spray on affected plant parts.
New!
Sharps Disposal Service

Sharps MUST be packaged in approved sharps containers.

The Alameda County Department of Environmental Health now provides a better, safe and practical solution for residents that generate “sharps” waste.
As of July 1st, 2005 the HHW program is accepting home generated “sharps” waste from Alameda County residents.

Alameda County residents can now dispose of their own home generated “sharps” waste safely and conveniently at any of Alameda County’s Household Hazardous Waste facilities, FREE!
This program is applicable to home generated “sharps” waste only. All businesses that generate sharps are required by the Medical Waste Management Act to have their biohazardous waste picked up by a registered biohazardous waste hauler.
However, although not recommended, it remains legal to dispose of sharps waste packaged in leak proof puncture resistant containers in your household garbage. We recommend sterilizing the sharps by adding a solution of 1 cup household bleach to your sharps container, top it off with plain water till all the sharps are immersed, let it stand for 20 minutes, then empty the bleach solution down the drain and seal the container before placing it in your garbage
NEVER PUT SHARPS IN A RECYCLING BIN!
Here are a few simple steps to use the Alameda County program:

Proof of Alameda County residency is required (such as a drivers license or utility bill).
Obtain a sharps container from your medical provider or local pharmacy where you purchase your injectable supplies.
Follow the instructions on the container – Don’t fill it all the way.
Close the container according to the instructions.
Check our schedule and bring it to one of our Household Hazardous Waste Facilities. As long as you are coming down…bring any other household hazardous waste you might have too!
Keep the container in the passenger compartment with you separate from any other waste you may bring, and let the greeter know you have sharps with you when you arrive.
That’s it!! Our technicians will accept your waste and safely dispose of it in a way that will render it harmless and non-infectious.
If you have a business that generates biohazardous or medical waste, or you are a traveling nurse call us at 510-567-6756 for details on proper disposal.
Sharps containers are available at most chain pharmacies and drugstores and at your local Health Plan Pharmacy. Check with your health provider at the time your prescription is written.
If you have difficulty finding your first container, call us - we can help. We can even get you your first one free if you can’t find it at your local drug store.
Call us at 510-670-6460 or toll-free 1-800-606-6606 or email HHWSharps@acgov.org for more details.

the count down has begun, and in 10 days, i will be an ex-pat of Adam's Point. i suppose the timing is fortuitous, given the recent spate of armed robberies on my street. but that actually has nothing to do with it...

the good news is that my girlfriend and i have found a beautiful loft on the other end of the lake, near Laney College. It's going to feel different for sure, and instead of Mt. Tam and the sunset, i'll be exposed to the hills and the sunrise.

i'm sure to make the rounds on a regular basis, as it's simply not possible to give up on the gems of the area such as Los Cantaros and Luka's -- and my neighborhood friends...

OAKLAND, May 17—Since March 19, 2005, over 40 robberies have occurred in the neighborhoods around Lake Merritt and slightly beyond. Most incidents have occurred between 10p.m.and 4 a.m., but others have occurred at different times. A group of possibly four or more suspects, acting in pairs, have attacked victims as they are entering homes or garages. They rushed up to the victims placing a gun on the victims' head. These suspects are extremely violent. While many victims have not been harmed, some have been knocked down and beaten. In two cases, the victims have been shot.

Pleasefind attached three composite sketches of possible suspects responsible for these robberies. The investigation is on going. Anyone with information about any of these incidents is asked to call Officer Jill Encinias at (510) 777-8624.

According to the Oakland Police Department, since the end of March, 2005 the area around the northeast part or Lake Merritt (encompassing the East Lakeside, Grand Lake, and Adams Point neighborhoods) has experienced over 40 robberies and personal assaults. Many of the attacks are organized, and most of the attacks have taken place from the hours of 10 PM to 4 AM. Most of the victims are apartment dwellers who must utilize on-street parking.

Oakland City Councilmember Nancy Nadel will hold a press conference to announce a new community outreach strategy aimed at raising public awareness around this dramatic increase in robberies taking place in the neighborhoods surrounding Lake Merritt. This street outreach will be door to door, and will focus on reaching those most at risk.

Joining Councilmember Nadel will be local community activists, Neighborhood Crime Prevention Councils (NCPC) leaders, District Two council office staff, and Oakland Police Staff.

According to Councilmember Nadel, "It is important that we in the community work together, and with the police department, to raise awareness around the issue of personal safety. We do not have to walk afraid, but we do have to walk smart. A neighborhood that is aware and working together is a safer neighborhood for everyone."

The Oakland Police Department's Neighborhood Services Coordinators and the NCPCs have been key in raising this awareness.

"It's devastating that some women refuse to go out at night because of fear," says Barbara Newcombe, a leader in the Beat 15 NCPC, which encompasses the area between Lake Merritt, Park Blvd, the 580 Freeway, and East 18th St, and straddles two Council districts. "No single person can do it alone. The community, the neighborhood, the society have to share the challenge."

"Raising awareness, we believe, will help prevent more assaults and robberies, and with more eyes on the street, and more people who know who to call, we hope that this will eventually lead to the arrest of these perpetrators," says Chris Tom, acting Chief of Staff of the District Two Council Office.

The first street outreach event will take place this Saturday, May 14, 2005 at 10 AM. Volunteers will meet once again at the Leaning Tower of Pizza, then fan out into the community of Beat 15, the hardest hit of all of the community policing beats in the area.

Bearer of bad news Beware! Crime Alert

Adams Point/Grand Lake/East Lakeside Neighborhood Crime Alert April 2005
NEIGHBORHOOD CRIME ALERT

Since March 19, thirty four armed robberies have occurred in the neighborhoods around Lake Merritt and slightly beyond. Most incidents have occurred between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m., but others have occurred at different times. A group of possibly four or more perpetrators, acting in pairs, have attacked victims as they are entering their homes or garages. They rushed up to the victims placing a gun on the victims head. These suspects are extremely violent. While many victims have not been harmed, some have been knocked down and beaten. In two cases thevictims have been shot.

What can we do?

1. Be Alert. Get to know your neighbors and report anyone who appears to be “casing” the neighborhood or following you suspiciously. Call 9-1-1. If are calling from a cell phone call (510) 777-3211.

2. Be cautious. Avoid late evening walks or take one or two friends with you. Stick to well-lighted public places with high visibility.

3. Get Involved. If you have any information about these incidents, call Officer Jill Encinias at (510)777-8624. She is investigating all of these cases. (Please don’t call Jill to ask questions. See “More Info” below.) Help pass the word. Pick up copies of this flyer from local merchants or download it from the Yahoo Groups below. Post them in your building and talk to your neighbors about the case. Stand up and organize. Join your Neighborhood Crime Prevention Council.

Start a Home Alert (neighborhood watch) group to get crime prevention and safety training. Sign up for one of the Yahoo groups listed below to receive future bulletins and updates.

So what's up with this place?

Aside from being bummed that both of the Round Tables I hung out at in junior high are gone (the other one on Piedmont), I am intrigued by Paradise's creepiness. Has anyone ever been inside? Is it a front for some nefarious activity?

Hey there - Nice to find you all! I've lived in the neighborhood for about five years and have always been interested in knowing more about my online neighbors.

Walking up Perkins tonight, I started wondering specifically about a neighborhood weblog -- does anyone know if we have one?

Maybe there's no point in such a thing when we have a group like this. But, I just though I'd check in, figuring if anyone knows it'd be this group.

Do any of you have blogs in which you write about the Oakland, the neighborhood?

So I'm not just rambling, here's some neighborhood links:

NorthEast Lake Merritt Neighborhoods: Neighbors & Activities:
http://www.ecovillage510.org/

Splash Pad Neighborhood Forum:
http://www.geocities.com/splashpad/

... and my blog, where I write about random Oakland tidbits from time to time:

May the upcoming week treat you well,

so i just joined the tribe; been in the hood (directly across the street from shari!!!). im into all the already proposed neighborhood fun activates - walking (the rose garden in the a.m. anyone?), potlucks or BBQs, progressive party!

and may i ask if anyone could recommend a good middle eastern grocery store - doesnt have to be in the neighborhood - that would be great.

Cheers,
R

the apartment hunt is almost over, i hope

my life has been a tornado of sorts this month. i sold my house (in lincoln heights), found an awesome full time software job at a restartup that starts next month, assisted at the awe to action conference, and managed to squeeze in two weekends in willits. and i still need to find an apartment, but that search will end this weekend -- it must.

right now, i'm looking at several prime flats on the point and the east side of the lake. given all the fine peeps i know who live in adams point, the slight nod is toward that direction, but there are also some fine places just to the east as well.

94610 or 94606? the answer will be revealed soon...

btw, if anyone has any leads, here are my specs:

1.5-2 br
dining space or large eik
private outdoor space (patio, deck, balcony, yard) a must
cat friendly
off street parking
gas range highly desired
fireplace would be nice, but optional
laundry in building (bonus points for in-unit hook up)
highly desired: ground floor storage or elevator access
rent <= $1800/mo

Almost there! (I think)

I'm moving this weekend, to what I think is Adams Point. But not totally sure I know where Adams Point is.

I'm moving to a place about a block from where Oakland and Harrison split into 2 one way streets, or join together, depending on your perspective. Do I qualify as Adams Point?
